Anmärkning: Allmän Cabet,E. - [Procès devant la Cour d'assises de Paris contre Etienne Cabet.] Paris, Rouanet 1833. 6 parts in 1 volume, bound with 2 related pamphlets. Contemp. calf, gilt back with red label, marbled sides and endpapers, extremities neatly repaired. An old former owner's name on title. Internally bright. First edition of this complete series of pamphlets relating to the case against Etienne Cabet, the author of the famous utopian novel 'Voyage en Icarie'. Etienne Cabet (1788-1856), the son of a cooper and a lawyer by profession, had for a time joined the sect of the French carbonari, but soon started to dislike its secret character. He took part in the revolution of July 1830 and was sent to Corsica as an attorney general, but dismissed because of his republican sympathy showed for the Polish insurgents. He was elected deputy for the Côte-d'Or in July 1831. He was held responsible for the disturbances of 5 and 6 June 1832 and the present pamphlets deal with the case against him. The session before the Cour d'assises of Paris took place on 15 April 1833 and lead to Cabet's complete acquittal. However, a new action brought against him for republican propaganda in his newly founded journal 'Le Populaire' forced him to leave France and lead to his exile in Brussels and London where he wrote is seminal 'Voyage en Icarie'. All parts of the present volume have a different title-page, but their numbering unveils their coherence. They are listed by Prudhommeaux under the one item A5 with the general title 'Faits préliminaires au procès devant la Cour d'assises contre M. Cabet, député de la Côte-d'Or', which title appears only at head of the drop-titles of the first three parts. Bound with are an apology of Cabet in verse, and a (second) pamphlet relating to the new case against him and his journal 'Le Populaire'. Detailed decription of all parts:1.
